Pella is a town about 40 miles southeast of Des Moines that’s best known for its Dutch heritage, which is still highlighted everywhere you turn in the community. From the Vermeer Mill, the largest working grain windmill in the country, to the Dutch letters sold in local bakeries, Pella has a lot to love. Pella is also home to Central College, a private four-year liberal arts college. There are also plenty of recreational opportunities in Pella. The community is near Lake Red Rock, Iowa’s largest lake. Fishing, boating, camping and hunting are popular activities around the lake. The Volksweg Trail runs 14 miles around the lake for biking and running, and there are also two golf courses in Pella. The biggest annual event in Pella is Tulip Time every spring, which brings thousands of visitors to the community to see the tulips and celebrate the Dutch culture. The event features two parades, contests, a craft market and more. Other events throughout the year include the Pella Historical Village Christmas Walk and the Lake Red Rock Balloonfest in the summer with hot air balloons, live music and a fun run.
